Quartz

Quartz is man-made and is comprised of about 90% ground quartz combined with a resin and pigment. It comes in a wide range of colours and styles, durable, non-porous stain and germ-resistant surface. Quartz is extremely consistent in pattern and colour and completely maintenance-free. Once it’s installed you never have to do anything to it again.

Cons

  • Less natural-looking than granite or marble
  • Colour is always consistent (no wild transitions which some people like)
  • Outdoor direct sunlight will fade the material
  • Limited colour selection

Solid Surface

Solid surface is a non-porous low-maintenance material used for surfaces such as countertops. It can mimic the appearance of granite, quartz, and other naturally occurring materials, and can be joined nearly invisibly by a trained craftsman.

  • Stain Resistant
  • Consistent colouring
  • Can look like granite or marble
  • Never has to be sealed
  • Food Safe (due to non-porous design)
  • Easily repaired in most cases
  • Softer material (more child-friendly)
  • Easy to work with for projects like sills and surrounds
  • Sinks can be integrated into the top for a smooth top to sink transitions
  • Seams are pretty much invisible with 95% of the colours available
  • Large number of colours to choose from
  • 10-year limited warranty
  • 2-year installation warranty

Cons

  • Scratches easily although it can be repaired
  • Does not react well to heat
  • Less natural-looking than granite or marble

Granite

Granite is quarried stone. It’s durable, naturally beautiful and does not require much maintenance. Granite is a naturally occurring material which means no two slabs will ever be exactly the same.

  • Non-consistent colour can be visually appealing
  • Seams blend in well but can be visible

  • Outdoor direct sunlight will not fade the material

Cons

  • Has to be sealed every one to two years
  • Can be fragile depending on the type of granite
  • No manufacturer warranty
